For my 25th birthday, I wanted to do a few things, one of which was go to a Hello Kitty Cafe. There are a few locations in Seoul but we hadn’t been to Hongdae yet and the location there is one of the bigger/older ones so I decided that’s where we would go.
Birthday Cafe!
My birthday:
I had my cake we got from a local bakery at midnight the night before. We began the day by going to Chungmuro to develop film, then went to Hongdae, tried to find a taco place but either the map was wrong or it was no longer there (we did see some Christmas decorations in the area which was nice, though), went to the Hello Kitty cafe, checked out the Hongdae area a little more, grabbed some food, picked up the film and went home where we watched Christmas movies. I originally intended to drink as well but was unsuccessful in finding the bars. This particular article will just focus on the cafe (and will primarily be pictures) and some other aspects of my birthday will be covered in other articles.
Like with most things, we had a little bit of trouble finding the Hello Kitty Cafe initially, but eventually made it there.
Grand Pink Entry
There was a nice entrance way and past it was a Hello Kitty mural on the wall and some information about how things work there.
We took a couple pictures and continued up a path to the area with the restaurant. The area is VERY themed (inside as well).
I tried out a Hello Kitty Bench. I loved that the place was all decorated for Christmas as well. Hello Kitty + Christmas decorations, very ideal for me.
We saw a photo booth and it was my birthday so I thought that would be fun but we couldn’t figure out how to get it working so we went inside. (Despite seeing people work on it while we were inside, it was also not working when we left).
And The Theming Continues!
Once inside, a woman took us upstairs and seated us with a menu. Many places here just give tables (however many people) one menu. Of course many restaurants also do family style dining (you order one large dish and share).
It was a little hard to decide. I was feeling a little ill and not as much in the mood for sugar (for once) since all I had was candy that day (I don’t think Kyle even had anything). I had been planning on us having Mexican first but we couldn’t find anything vegetarian after not finding the taco place. The cafe did offer some regular food: hot dogs and this egg/cheese thing but those things do not appeal to me. I still wanted something of course.
Originally I had thought I would get a Hello Kitty coffee but I decide on a hot chocolate. For food, I got a little tiramisu cake. Kyle got a cookies and cream cake slice. Aside from the other food mentioned, the menu has both cold and hot drinks (coffee, tea, lemonade), waffle, bread, cake, and yogurt/ice cream. Some of the cakes were in the shape of a hello kitty head but those were a little bit more in price and the tiramisu seemed more appealing and had a picture of Hello Kitty on it.
I went downstairs and ordered. The total for the two cakes slices and the drink was KRW 14,500 (~$12.40). After ordering I came back up and we explored a little bit upstairs.
Buzz, Buzz – It’s Delicious Time
When the buzzer went off Kyle went down and grabbed the food. Everything was not only cute, but also good. The hot chocolate was good and the tiramisu was delicious. Kyle’s cake (I tried it) was good too but I was happy with mine.
After we were done we brought the dishes down and checked out the gift shop and the downstairs a little bit.
Before we left, we used the bathroom (which was also themed). I have found it is not uncommon for a bathroom to be themed with a place/restaurant/cafe.
A nice time at the Hello Kitty Cafe in Hongdae!
